Practical-intensive training course
Cell sorting by flow cytometry (Fluorescence-Activated Cell Sorting, FACS) is a technology that enables the purification of cell subpopulations from a heterogeneous cell suspension. Compared with other cell separation methods, sorting by FACS allows simultaneous isolation of multiple cell populations with very high purity, preserving their viability and sterility. However, the accuracy of the sample preparation to be sorted, the proper design of the antibody panel used to identify the cell populations of interest, and the appropriate instrument setting are essential steps that determine the quality of the sorting.
The program includes (i) a theoretical explanation of the principles of cell sorting; (ii) individual laboratory activities for sample preparation, instrument setting and purification of specific cell subpopulations; (iii) individual computer classroom activities for the evaluation of the quality of the sorted samples; and (iv) collective case discussion and troubleshooting in order to acquire skills of the management of the most frequently encountered problems during the use of the technology.
